About the Festival

What is the hottest event of the summer? It’s The Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival. It takes place on Sunday August 3, 2008. Be part of the fun when you join in the dragon boat races to be held at Waterfront Park (Lake and College Streets) in Burlington, Vermont. What is dragon boating? Just think the HOTTEST sport going! It's the fastest and most fun paddle team sport around. A team of 20 paddlers sits aboard a 40-foot long canoe. There is a steersperson in the back guiding the boat while a drummer sits in the front beating out the cadence of the strokes. Dragon boating is the ultimate team sport. No matter your age, gender, or athletic ability, it is a sport that provides that equal playing field. There are no superstars. It is 20 paddlers attempting to paddle in unison. The boat glides when all 20 paddlers are stroking together and oh the feeling is unforgettable. Give it a try. Join in the races.

Dragonheart Vermont, a breast cancer survivor and supporter dragon boat team, will host this exciting community event. Our venue is the Burlington Waterfront, nestled between Vermont's own Green Mountains and New York's Adirondacks. Our hope is to get our community out for a day of fitness and fun. Our goal is to raise funds for Dragonheart Vermont and for the Cancer Patient Support Program’s Emergency Fund. This fund helps Vermont cancer patients in need with everything from transportation to chemo to Copra payments for heath insurance to childcare. An emergency fund like this makes a real difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors who have nowhere else to turn.

Mark down Sunday, August 3rd for the 2008 Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival. It's a day for community, camaraderie, and competition. Anyone can band together a group of 21 people (20 paddlers and 1 drummer) to form a racing team. The cost is only $1470 to register a team—just $70 per person. We are encouraging teams to muster more than their race fees to help these worthy causes. Special baseball caps can be purchased to help you reach this goal easily.

Each team will paddle in two races, vie for a divisional cup, receive festival T-shirts, and be awarded medals for participating In the event. The top 25 teams will move on to finals to vie for the Citizens Bank Champ Cup.

Dragonheart Vermont is also pleased to be able to host a very special day just for breast cancer survivor dragon boat teams. It’s the Sisters at Heart Celebration (formerly known as The Well Healed Challenge) and it’s set for Saturday, August 3, 2008. What an incredible time to celebrate our sisterhood and our passion for this sport. Our day will address issues specific to breast cancer survivors, who are dragon boaters.

Cheer on our community teams as they paddle in these exciting dragon boat races. Better yet, sign on to become a community racer! Be inspired by the determination of the breast cancer survivor dragon boat teams as they participate in The Breast Cancer Survivor Challenge Cup. Get involved as a volunteer. Come cheer on the racers at Waterfront Park. Eat yummy food. Bid for unique Silent Auction items. Be entertained by a host of performers in a great celebration of LIFE! Bring the kids. Bring your neighbors. Join in the celebration. See the heart-stopping finals in the Citizens Bank Champ Cup. Help raise funds for Dragonheart Vermont and for the Cancer Patient Support Program’s Emergency Fund.

Come on, everybody. Join in.

Sincere thanks to everyone at the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival! We'll see you all there!!

~ 8th Annual Stowe Weekend of Hope

Was held Friday, May 2 - Sunday, May 4, 2008

The Stowe Weekend of Hope is an annual forum for education, enlightenment, and recreation for cancer patients and survivors with any type of cancer...and their families. The focus is to inspire, educate, and celebrate the lives of people living with the cancer. This unique event addresses the complex challenges and needs of people with cancer at any stage in their disease. Cancer presents families with many challenges - physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial.

The Stowe Weekend of Hope was founded in 2001 and continues to be a three day weekend retreat and outreach experience for hundreds of cancer survivors and their families in the restorative environment of Stowe, Vermont. Since its inception, this event has grown locally and nationally to continue to inspire the search for new and innovative research and education in both the traditional and non-traditional cancer treatments and therapies. This forum promotes real educational opportunities for cancer patients and presents the most current medical research in all areas of cancer treatments.

This year, from May 2-4, the Stowe Weekend of Hope presented nationally renowned oncology specialists from around New England, as well as leading oncologists and researchers from the Vermont Cancer Center, the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care Division of Hematology and Oncology. In addition, this weekend offered supportive mechanisms for healing, comfort, spiritual enlightenment and communion.

Each year, the Stowe Area Association lodging members donate hundreds of free rooms to cancer survivors and their loved ones. The Stowe community opens its collective hearts and doors, places of worship, and beautiful natural wonders to families needing a retreat dedicated to giving them the tools to cope with cancer.

~ "Cabin Fever Reliever 2008"

featuring Bill Kirchen, The Starline Rhythm Boys & Slippery Sneakers
Was held on April 5, 2008
Sheraton, Burlington - Emerald Grand Ballroom
Burlington

500+ people attended Northern New England’s favorite rockabilly dance party with a cajun twist, when Grammy-nominated Bill Kirchen ("The Titan of the Telecaster") joined the Starline Rhythm Boys and Rhode Island Zydeco sensations Slippery Sneakers. Kirchen gained renown as a founding member and lead guitarist and vocalist for country-rockers Commander Cody & his Lost Planet Airmen, and played on ten Commander Cody albums over ten years, and his battered Telecaster guitar drove "Hot Rod Lincoln" into the Top Ten in the 70's.

This 6th Annual Benefit for The Cancer Patient Support Program was presented by Smith, Bell & Thompson Insurance.

For details and sponsorhip opportunities for "Cabin Fever 2009" on April 4th, 2009, please contact: Doug Grahn at dgrahn@sbtinsurance.com. The 2009 dance concert will feature Girl Howdy, named one of the best bands in Western Massachusetts, along with Bill Kirchen and The Starline Rhythm Boys.

~ "6th Annual DJT Road Rally

Was held on Saturday, March 22, 2008

On March 22nd, friends and family of Danielle Tomko held the 6th Annual Road Rally to honor Danielle and raise important funds for Danielle’s favorite charities.

Designed to show love and support for Danielle as she faced cancer, Caroline Riehl and other friends surprised Danielle with the first Road Rally in 2003. After the first year Danielle helped to plan the events and determine which organizations would benefit from them. The Cancer Patient Support Program has been chosen each year as one of the recipients of donations raised from this great event.

This year's event raised over $10,000 distributed between the CPSP Emergency Fund and the Leuukemia/Lymphoma Society! Special thanks to organizer Caroline Reihl. Her dedication, planning and hard work are an inspiration to all of us.

For more information on next year's event, please contact: djt_roadrally@yahoo.com

~ Face Off Against Breast Cancer

Was held on Sunday, January 26 & 27, 2008

The Middlebury Otters and the Middlebury Mystix, two women’s community ice hockey teams, proudly hosted the 9th annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” hockey tournament on Saturday and Sunday, January 26 and 27, 2008, at Howard Brush Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury. This amazing group of dedicated women raised in excess of $26,000 over that weekend to benefit the CPSP Emergency Fund!!

The tournament was established in 2000 when a member of the Middlebury Otters was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, her survivor story is now a success. The need for support continues, however: the American Cancer Society estimates that over 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Both the Otters and Mystix have breast cancer survivors on their rosters.

Now bigger and better than ever, the tournament has expanded into a two-day format with both competitive and recreational divisions. Overall, the event included eight women’s hockey teams from all over Vermont, competing in games throughout both days, with ongoing hospitality and refreshments in the Warming Hut. Visiting teams included the Brattleboro Night Hawks, the Burlington Ice Breakers, Rutland Cutting Edge, the Waterbury Green Mountain Thunder, the Waterbury Ice Storm, and the Waterbury Wicked.

For more information about next year's event, please contact Liz Cronin at orrcro@sover.net
